ESD tests determine whether the discharge of electrostatic energy causes damage to a device or leads to malfunctions

Electrostatic discharge occurs due to the accumulation of electronic charge on the surface of materials and are a common problem with sensitive electronics. The voltages of up to several kilovolts that occur during an electrostatic discharge can severely damage these devices.

Testing in accordance with the standard DIN EN 61000-4-2 / IEC 61000-4-2 and the ISO 10605 standard for automotive applications serves as verification, that no damage or permanent malfunctions occur to the test specimen due to the influence of electrostatic discharges. The contact discharge is the preferred test method as it has a very high reproducibility. ESD tests using air discharges must be used where contact discharge is not possible, e.g. due to non-conductive surfaces.

AKUVIB carries out comprehensive ESD measurements for you. Our state of the art facilities and experienced engineers enable us to, ESD testing for a wide range of electronic devices and systems.

If you’re looking for accredited EMC measurements, you’ve come to the right place. Contact us today to find out more about our services and how we can help you ensure the EMC compliance of your products.

Extracts from the relevant standards

DIN EN 61000-4-2 / IEC 61000-4-2 – ESD The test relates to devices that may be exposed to static electricity discharges due to the ambient and installation conditions. During discharge, a discharge voltage of several thousand volts is reached and discharge currents of over 30 A flow briefly for a few nanoseconds, whereby components on a circuit board can very easily be destroyed by these amounts of energy.

ISO 10605 - ESD The test relates to complete vehicles and components, which may be exposed to discharges of static electricity both during installation (packaging and handling) and during operation (powered-up). Discharges are realized directly on the test specimen as well as indirect discharges on nearby metal surfaces. This test is also part of almost all automotive manufacturers’ factory standards and can be carried out at AKUVIB.
