The radiated immunity test is important to ensure that electronic devices are robust enough to withstand exposure to external electromagnetic fields.

At sufficiently high frequencies and energy, the conductor tracks and connecting cables of a device become receiving antennas. Depending on the area of application, considerable field strengths of several 100 V/m can occur in the environment, which can affect a device in the frequency range of up to several gigahertz. Magnetic fields with several 1000 A/m can also have an influence.

The test of the radiated immunity, e.g. according to the test standard EN IEC 61000-4-3 or for the automotive sector according to the test standards ISO 11452-2, ISO 11452-8 and ISO 11452-9, serves as proof, that no damage or permanent or temporary malfunctions occur to the test specimen due to the influence of an interference field.
Depending on the severity of the test, the test specimen and its functions should not be affected by the fields.

Extracts from the relevant standards

  • DIN EN 61000-4-8 / IEC 61000-4-8 – Magnetic fields with energy frequencies
The immunity to pulsed magnetic fields, which mainly occur in industrial plants, railroad systems and medium and high-voltage switchgear, is tested.
  • IEC 61000-4-10 – Damped oscillating magnetic fields
This tests the immunity of electrical and electronic devices (equipment) to damped oscillating magnetic fields. These are generated, for example, by switching busbars in medium and high-voltage systems using isolators or disconnectors.
  • ISO 11452-9 – Interference immunity against mobile transmitters
This involves testing the immunity of electrical and electronic devices (equipment) against mobile transmitters of the various radio services. These include, for example, CB radio, analog and digital radio, government radio, digital TV, WLAN and the various mobile radio services.
